Black Heritage Month – Reading Rainbow Live Stream Event

Reading Rainbow live-streamed readings are back!

Thanks to the Reading Rainbow Team, all York Catholic elementary schools are once again invited to participate in a live-streamed book reading event in celebration of Black Heritage Month.

On February 24th, student leaders from St. Joan of Arc CHS in Maple, St. Theresa of Lisieux CHS in Richmond Hill and Father Michael McGivney CA in Markham will host live-streamed, read-aloud presentations of three different books written by Black authors. The books selected for this special event are: Malaika’s Surprise by Nadia L. Hohn for primary students, The Day You Begin by Jacqueline Woodson for junior students, and Oscar Lives Next Door by Bonnie Farmer for intermediate students.

The reading events will each be approximately 45 – 60 minutes. Following each reading there will be an opportunity for discussion. Additional follow-up activities for schools have also been provided. These three readings are part of the Board’s Black, Indigenous, People of Colour Digital Bookshelf.

More information for staff interested in bringing this opportunity to their students should review System Memo #24.
